This
is a FAQ on what to remember when becoming a Creative Collaborator in
the process of creating and realizing The Encampment.
HOW DO I
GET INVOLVED?
- That's easy.
- Send a letter of intent to NationalEncampment@gmail.com
and
express why you want to become a Creative Collaborator and a little on
your creative background. Deadline is August 15, 2008 (See Call for
Participation).
- After that we will send you an on-line
application form to submit.
- The selection process of all Creative
Collaborators will be
completed by August 18. Some cases earlier or later depending on the
scheduled Installation
Creation Workshop in your region.
DO I HAVE
TO HAVE A STORY AND INSTALLATION IDEA IN PLACE TO BE SELECTED?
- No. The Creative Process starts after
you have been selected.
ONCE I AM
SELECTED AS A CREATIVE COLLABORATOR WHAT HAPPENS THEN?
- You will become a member of our National Creation Network,
a down to earth, no bells and whistles way for all of us to remain
connected as a national creative team.
- More on that when you are selected but
think of it as an on-line Design
Journal.
WHAT DOES
THE RESEARCH PROCESS INVOLVE?
- Every Creative Collaborator will start
to dig and
discover stories from the history of intellectual disability, and then
select one that inspires you.
- You will also be able to work with the
local ACL people
(Association for Community Living - www.cacl.ca) who are already
gathering and assembling stories.
- Building a Google Group Story Bank with as
many stories as
possible for all project members from across the country to access.
CAN I POST
A STORY THAT I HAVE OR DISCOVER THROUGH MY RESEARCH?
- Absolutely. As part of the team of our National Creation Network,
we are encouraging every one to gather and post as many stories as
possible so our Story Bank becomes a great resource for the stories and
history of intellectual disability.
- You will also post the story you have selected.
CAN I USE
MY OWN STORY?
- Yes and No. We are asking that all
Creative
Collaborators have a certain amount of distance from the story that
they choose, however, your story can be included in the Story Bank for
other Creative Collaborators to potentially use.
WHEN CAN I SELECT MY STORY?
- After your research into other stories and the history of intellectual disability.
- This is part of our process so that story and
history are properly contextualized before the Installation Creation
Workshop begins.
WHEN DO I
START TO MAKE MY INSTALLATION?
- At the Installation Creation Workshop. Depending on your region the workshops
will be scheduled with the local ACL, since each participating region will
have a hub where the Installation Creation Workshops take place.
CAN I
HAVE MY INSTALLATION MADE BEFORE THE INSTALLATION CREATION WORKSHOP
BEGINS?
- No. We work as a group to develop the
installations.
WHAT CAN I DO ONCE I HAVE SELECTED MY STORY?
- We will work with with you at this point but to a
certain degree, what you do after you select a story will be dependent
on that story. Concepts, preliminary designs, materials, etc. will be
thought about. This work happens before the Installation Creation
Workshop.
HOW MANY
HOURS WILL I HAVE TO COMMIT TO DOING THE WORKSHOP?
- 20 hours of scheduled workshop time over
a period of 3-5 days.
- The most up-to-date Schedule will be
posted regularly on the website.
WHAT
EXACTLY HAPPENS IN AN INSTALLATION CREATION WORKSHOP?
- You learn and share the
techniques for
developing an installation specific to this artwork’s concept
and
content. We also share our selected stories, explore our different
experience and look at the visual and emotional emblems in the story.
We will work together to transform our images, thoughts and feelings
into a visual work and then pack it up for transport to Ottawa.
- Remember that your final work must fit
into a large weather-proof
archive box. It must be accompanied by a set-up manual for the Ottawa
presentation October 2-4, 2008, so that our production team can clearly
set-up your work if you are not present.
- It is mandatory for Creative
Collaborators to attend the
entire Installation Creation Workshop and develop their own Living
Studio pages.
DO I GET TO
KEEP MY WORK?
- At the end of the project, the work of
every
Creative Collaborator will be donated to the enduring archive of The
Encampment and the Story Bank will be donated to the CACL.
- Photographs and other documentation of
the process and final
artwork will be posted on the website as a national testimony to what
everyone created and gave together.
- Consider The Encampment a kind of
creative Potlatch.
DO CREATIVE
COLLABORATORS GET PAID?
- We consider
our work a creative exchange, a barter. We offer the conceptual arena
and means for a creative collaboration and presentation free of charge
in exchange for your participation to create something larger than any
one of us can do on our own.
HOW DOES MY
WORK AND EFFORT GET RECOGNIZED?
- Your Living Studio, in the programme, on
the website and the catalogue.
I CANNOT
COMMIT TO BEING A CREATIVE COLLABORATOR; ARE THERE OTHERS WAY TO
PARTICIPATE?
- Yes.
- However, the same application process of
sending a letter of
intent to NationalEncampment@gmail.com
will be required, after which
you will be sent an on-line application form to complete for Studio SM
outlining these other ways to particiapte.

other questions, please do not hesitate to email us at
