Studio SM thought you might like to see some of the images and press that came
out of the Ottawa version of The Encampment. After its original commission for Toronto's Nuit Blanche 06, curated by Clara Hargittay, Studio SM presented The Encampment in New York City in a partnership with openhousenewyork 07. The Canadian Association for Community Living (CACL) then presented a national version of the work with a focus on the history of intellectual disability in Canada as part of their 50th anniversary cultural initiatives. Thom Sokoloski and Jenny McCowan, now under the banner of Studio SM, planned and led installation creation workshops with Creative Collaborators in Moncton, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Whitehorse, Toronto and Ottawa. Stories from the past and present history of intellectual disability from across Canada were selected and transposed into visual experiences for each of the tents. The entire installation was then exhibited in Major's Hill Park facing the Parliament and the National Gallery of Art.
